Daily Use

In 1880, a telephone user—typically a business owner, professional, or wealthy household—would lift the handset and listen for a dial tone (or in earlier systems, ring the exchange operator). The user would either speak the number to the operator or, after 1889, rotate the dial to send pulses to the exchange. The operator (usually a young woman, trained and supervised) would plug the call into the appropriate line, connecting the caller to the recipient. The recipient's telephone would ring—a loud electromagnetic bell—and they would answer. Conversation was conducted in a normal voice, though early lines were noisy and long-distance calls required shouting. After the call, the user would hang up the handset, breaking the connection. By 1900, in major cities, telephone service was available 24 hours a day. Operators worked in shifts in large exchanges, managing thousands of lines. Residential users paid a monthly fee (typically $2–5 in 1900, equivalent to $60–150 today) for unlimited local calls; long-distance calls were metered and expensive. By 1914, the telephone had become routine in business and increasingly common in middle-class homes.

Construction

A telephone exchange was a substantial building or room, typically located in a central city district. The core was the *switchboard*—a wall of jacks (small sockets) arranged in a grid, with one jack per subscriber line. Operators sat at the switchboard, wearing headsets, with a plug and cord in each hand. When a call came in, the operator would insert a plug into the jack corresponding to the calling line, listen to the number, and then insert the other plug into the jack for the called line, completing the circuit. Early switchboards (1878–1889) were entirely manual; the operator had to physically insert and remove plugs for each call. The Strowger automatic switch (1889) introduced mechanical automation: a caller could dial a number using a rotary dial, which sent electrical pulses to a stepping switch that automatically routed the call. By 1914, most exchanges used a hybrid system: local calls were routed automatically via stepping switches, while long-distance calls still required operator assistance. The exchange building also housed batteries (for power), ringers (to signal incoming calls), and repeaters (to amplify signals on long-distance lines).
