Electrification of the City

Between 1870 and 1914, electric power transformed cities from gas-lit, horse-drawn settlements into coordinated systems of light, transit, and industry. Central power stations, copper networks, and the dynamo made urban life modern.
Thomas Alva Edison (1847–1931) dominates the narrative of urban electrification, yet the exhibit centers on the *system* he and his rivals built rather than the man alone. Edison's Pearl Street Station (New York, 1882) was the first central generating plant to supply direct current to paying customers in a defined district—a proof of concept. But George Westinghouse (1846–1914) and Nikola Tesla (1856–1943) championed alternating current, which could transmit power over greater distances at lower cost, ultimately prevailing. The true hero is the *infrastructure*: the dynamo, the transformer, the copper wire, and the municipal franchise that licensed private corporations to wire cities. By 1914, electrification was a solved problem of engineering and capital, not invention.

Engineering

The electrification of cities required three interlocking systems: generation, transmission, and distribution. At the central station, coal-fired boilers drove steam turbines coupled to dynamos (generators), producing either direct current (DC, Edison's preference) or alternating current (AC, Westinghouse's choice). AC's advantage was the transformer—a device that stepped voltage up for long-distance transmission (reducing copper loss) and back down for household use. Transmission lines, initially bare copper on wooden poles, carried current from the station to neighborhood substations, where step-down transformers reduced voltage to 110 or 220 volts for street lighting and home use. Distribution networks branched into alleys and under streets, feeding individual buildings. By 1900, the AC system had won the 'War of Currents,' and cities adopted standardized voltages and frequencies to allow interconnection. The engineering challenge was not the physics—well understood by 1870—but the economics and regulation: who owned the wires, who paid for them, and how to prevent monopolistic abuse.

Historical Overview

The electrification of cities was not a single invention but a cascade of technical and commercial innovations spanning 1870–1914. In the 1870s, electric arc lamps (developed by Jablochkoff, Brush, and others) began replacing gas streetlights in major cities—London (1878), Paris (1880), New York (1880). These early systems used direct current and required a generating plant within a mile or two of the load. Edison's Pearl Street Station (September 4, 1882, New York) demonstrated that a central station could supply a neighborhood profitably. By 1890, however, the limitations of DC were clear: voltage drop over distance made it impractical for cities larger than a few square miles. The transformer (1881) and AC generators made long-distance transmission feasible. Westinghouse's victory at Niagara Falls (1895)—transmitting 50,000 volts from the falls to Buffalo, 26 miles away—proved the superiority of AC. By 1900, AC had become the standard in North America and Europe. Electrification accelerated after 1900: electric trolleys replaced horse-drawn streetcars, factories switched to electric motors (eliminating dangerous belt-drive systems), and domestic use grew from lighting to heating and refrigeration. By 1914, most major cities in the industrialized world had central-station electric service, though rural areas remained dark. The process was not inevitable: it required massive capital investment, political franchising, and the willingness of customers to pay for a service they had never known they needed.

Why It Existed

Electrification solved multiple urgent urban problems simultaneously. Gas lighting was expensive, dangerous (leaks caused explosions), and dim; arc lamps were brighter but required local generation. Horse-drawn transport clogged streets and produced tons of manure daily—a public-health crisis. Electric trolleys (streetcars) were cleaner, faster, and more reliable. Factories powered by steam engines and belt drives were inefficient and hazardous; electric motors allowed flexible machinery placement and safer operation. As cities grew denser and taller (steel-frame buildings required mechanical elevators), the demand for reliable power became acute. Electrification also promised social progress: electric light extended the productive day, electric heating reduced dependence on coal, and electric refrigeration improved food safety. For investors and municipalities, electrification was profitable: central stations generated revenue from customers, and cities could license franchises to private corporations, shifting capital costs to the private sector. The technology also served imperial ambitions: electrified cities were symbols of modernity and progress, and control of power systems was a form of political control. By 1914, electrification was not a luxury but a competitive necessity for any city aspiring to be modern.

Daily Use

For a middle-class household in 1900, electrification began with a single incandescent bulb in the parlor, powered by a meter that charged per kilowatt-hour (typically 10–20 cents per kWh, expensive by modern standards). A servant or householder would turn the light on and off by hand; there were no wall switches initially—the light hung from the ceiling, controlled by a pull cord. By 1910, a wired home might have five to ten bulbs, wall switches, and perhaps an electric iron or fan. Kitchens were transformed: electric stoves (rare before 1910 but growing) replaced coal ranges, and electric refrigerators began to appear in wealthy homes after 1910, though ice delivery remained common. For a factory worker, electrification meant safer, better-lit workplaces and faster trolleys to get there. For a street vendor or shopkeeper, electric light extended business hours and attracted customers. For a city dweller, the most immediate change was street lighting: by 1900, major thoroughfares in New York, London, and Paris were lit by electric arc or incandescent lamps, making nighttime navigation safer and enabling evening entertainment (theaters, restaurants, shops). The trolley was transformative: a journey that took an hour by horse-drawn omnibus took fifteen minutes by electric car, enabling suburban expansion. At the municipal level, electrification required new bureaucracies: electrical inspectors, utility commissions, and rate-setting bodies emerged to manage the system and prevent abuse.

Crew / Personnel

Central-station operation required a new class of skilled workers. A typical station employed 20–50 people: engineers (college-educated, commanding high salaries) who designed and maintained equipment; firemen who tended boilers; dynamo operators who monitored generators and adjusted load; switchboard operators (often young men or women) who manually connected circuits and responded to demand; electricians who installed and repaired distribution lines; and clerks who managed billing and customer records. Outside the station, the distribution network employed linemen (often unionized by 1910) who climbed poles to install, repair, and maintain wires—dangerous work, with frequent electrocutions. Meter readers visited homes and businesses monthly. At the municipal level, electrical inspectors (a new profession) ensured that wiring met safety codes. By 1914, the electrical industry employed tens of thousands in North America and Europe. Training was informal at first—apprenticeships and on-the-job learning—but by 1900, technical schools and correspondence courses in electrical engineering were common. The profession attracted ambitious working-class men seeking upward mobility; an experienced lineman or station engineer could earn $20–40 per week, roughly double a factory worker's wage.

Construction

Building a central station was a major civic undertaking. A typical 1890s station required a site of one to three acres, access to coal (by rail) and water (for cooling), and proximity to the district to be served. The building itself was a substantial structure: brick or steel frame, 100–200 feet long, with a tall smokestack (100+ feet) for draft. Inside, massive boilers (often three to six) occupied the ground floor; above them, the engine room housed steam engines or turbines coupled to dynamos. The switchboard occupied a separate room, staffed continuously. Foundations had to support enormous weight: a 5,000 kW station weighed hundreds of tons. Construction took one to two years and cost $500,000–$2,000,000 (1890s dollars). Once operational, the station required constant maintenance: boilers were cleaned and inspected, dynamos were serviced, and switchgear was tested. Distribution lines were constructed by teams of linemen: wooden poles were set in the ground (typically 125 feet apart), insulators were mounted, and copper wire was strung and tensioned. Underground conduits in city streets were laid by laborers, often in difficult conditions. A typical city might require 500–2,000 miles of distribution line to serve a population of 500,000. Maintenance was ongoing: poles rotted and had to be replaced, wires sagged and had to be retensioned, and insulators cracked and had to be swapped. By 1914, a major city's electrical infrastructure represented an investment of tens of millions of dollars and employed thousands of workers.

Variations

Electrification took different paths in different regions. In North America, Edison's DC system dominated initially (1882–1895), but Westinghouse's AC system prevailed after 1895. In Europe, AC was adopted more quickly; Germany, under the influence of Siemens and AEG, standardized on AC by 1890. Some cities adopted a hybrid approach: DC for dense urban cores (where short distances made it efficient) and AC for outlying areas. Voltage standards varied: North America settled on 110/220 volts AC, while Europe adopted 220/380 volts, a difference that persists today. Frequency varied too: North America standardized on 60 Hz, while Europe adopted 50 Hz. Some cities, like Chicago, built multiple central stations to serve different districts, while others (like London) relied on a single large station. Ownership structures varied: some cities operated municipal utilities (common in Europe), while others licensed private corporations (common in North America). Fuel sources varied: coal was universal, but some stations near waterfalls (like Niagara) used hydroelectric power, which was cheaper and cleaner. Lighting technology evolved: arc lamps (1880–1900) gave way to incandescent bulbs (1900–1914), which were more efficient and safer.
