The Industrial City

The Industrial City emerged 1760–1914 as steam power, coal, iron, and mechanized textile production transformed rural landscapes into dense urban centers. Factories, railways, and foundries concentrated labor, capital, and innovation, anchoring the Age of Revolutions' material and social upheaval.
James Watt (1736–1819), Scottish engineer and instrument maker, perfected the separate-condenser steam engine (patented 1769), dramatically improving fuel efficiency and enabling the mechanization of textile mills, mines, and transport. His partnership with Matthew Boulton (1728–1809) at Soho Foundry, Birmingham, from 1775 onward, mass-produced engines that powered the Industrial Revolution's infrastructure. Historical Overview

Construction
